Pontiac Water Pump Identifier: Which Pump Do You Have?

Before ordering a March Performance pulley system for your Pontiac engine, one of the most important things to identify is your water pump configuration. Pontiac V8 engines used several different water pump designs over the years, and the differences matter when selecting the correct March Performance kit for your build.

Why it matters

March Performance's Pontiac pulley and serpentine systems are engineered around specific water pump configurations. The pump bolt pattern, snout length, hub height, and inlet orientation all affect how the pulley system fits and aligns. Getting this right before you order saves time and ensures your system goes together cleanly the first time.

Pontiac water pump configurations

Start here: 8-bolt vs. 11-bolt Primary identifier

The first thing to identify on your Pontiac water pump is the bolt count — specifically, how many bolts retain the pump to the timing cover. Pontiac V8 pumps fall into two categories:

  • 8-bolt pumps — found on earlier applications
  • 11-bolt pumps — the more common configuration across most Pontiac 326–455 V8 builds
All March Performance Pontiac pulley systems are designed around the 11-bolt pump. If you're running an 8-bolt pump, contact our tech line before ordering.

11-bolt hub height: 4" vs. 4.5" Measure before ordering

Within the 11-bolt family, there are two different hub heights — the distance from the timing cover mounting surface to the front face of the pulley hub:

  • 4" hub height
  • 4.5" hub height
All March Performance products are based on the 11-bolt pump with the 4.5" hub height. If your pump has the shorter 4" hub, pulley alignment will be off. Measure your hub height with a caliper before ordering.

Rotation direction

All factory Pontiac water pumps are clockwise rotation when viewed from the front of the engine. This applies across the full 326–455 V8 engine family — GTO, Firebird, Trans Am, Bonneville, Grand Prix, and all other Pontiac V8 applications from the mid-1960s through the early 1980s. March Performance systems are designed for this standard clockwise rotation.

Aftermarket and aluminum pumps

Many performance Pontiac builds run aluminum aftermarket water pumps for weight savings and improved flow. These pumps can vary in hub height and snout length compared to the original cast iron pumps. If you're running an aftermarket pump, identify the make and model and call our tech line — we can confirm compatibility with your March Performance system before you order.
